Claude Code & Codex as AI backend · BYO-AI
Two major providers can now be connected as an AI backend with no API key at all, just your existing subscription: an already locally installed and logged-in Claude Code CLI (new July 17, 2026) or – new as of July 18, 2026 – OpenAI's Codex CLI. Both run through a local MCP server that exposes Kidge's tools. Claude Code is confirmed with a real end-to-end test in Inventor (MCP handshake, tool call, response); Codex is verified end-to-end up to the login step (requires a one-time codex login outside of Kidge). Since July 20, 2026, both offer real model choice instead of a single fixed default: Claude Code lets you pick between Sonnet, Opus, Haiku, and Fable; Codex between GPT-5.5, GPT-5.4, and GPT-5.4 mini.
Honesty note: Claude Code CLI is structurally about 5× slower than direct API access (its own system prompt, internal model routing, a full process restart per message) – the same tradeoff likely applies to Codex CLI. Not a Kidge bug and no fix in sight, but the "no API key needed" promise remains fully intact.
Compatible AI models
Kidge isn't tied to a single AI provider. Freely choose between cloud and local models in the settings dialog – compatibility is rated honestly, based on how well a model handles the agentic tool loop and image feedback. Currently, 34 models across 16 providers are directly selectable, including both CLI backends (Claude Code, Codex) with real model choice since July 20, 2026.
Note: the 9 most recently enabled providers (Mistral, DeepSeek, xAI, Perplexity, LM Studio, Azure OpenAI, OpenRouter, Cerebras, Together.ai) are carefully researched but not yet verified against real accounts – feedback on these is welcome.
Google/Gemini remains normally selectable via API key (2 models, see below). An additional no-API-key Google CLI connection is planned but intentionally on hold: Google's Gemini CLI is currently being rebuilt into a new "Antigravity CLI" and is too unstable for integration right now.
Uses your existing Claude or ChatGPT subscription instead of a separate API key – but structurally slower than direct API access (see note above). Claude Code verified live in Inventor, Codex up to the login step.

Other CAD systems
Kidge is starting focused with Autodesk Inventor. Long-term, Kidge is planned as a CAD AI for SolidWorks, FreeCAD, Autodesk Fusion 360 and Solid Edge too, once the core scope for Inventor is mature. Autodesk Vault already has a first, generic connection – deeper, native integration follows later.
AI model verification
Mistral, DeepSeek, xAI, Perplexity, Azure OpenAI, OpenRouter, Cerebras, Together.ai, and local LM Studio have been directly selectable since July 17, 2026 – verification against real accounts is still ongoing.
